In writing we have been continuing westward expansion. We chose a topic to write about and created headings for it. Here are some example topics; the dangers on the oregon trail, the Native Americans during the time of westward expansion, the donner party, Lewis and Clark, and more. AFter we decided our topic and wrote down our headings (on post-its), we started drafting underneath the headings. Soon we are going to be writing the articles about our topic, like Ms.Fought said we would.

In reading we have been looking more into finding text structure and main ideas in articles. We would take an article and Ms.Greller would split it up into sections and we would have to either find what text structure that section uses, or the main idea. Also Ms.Greller really wants to put out there for us that one article won’t have just one text structure. For example when she split up an article into sections for us, one paragraph was split in ½!

In math we have just taken the test for adding and subtracting fractions. And we are now moving into our new unit of multiplying fractions. We have used models of making dots into rows according to the denominator, and then circling some of the dots according to the numerator. If you want to know more on this method, in HWS 52, the first problem gives an example of how to use that method.

This week in reading we have  been working on our tackling non-fiction unit and we are currently studying text structures such as main idea and detail, problem and solution as well as cause and effect. We are learning to dig deeper  in our books. At the end of the unit we will be writing our own short books on whatever non-fiction topic we choose.

In writing we have finished up our PSA unit. We have written multiple reflections for writing. We wrote one on PSA’s. We also wrote one on what grade we think we should get, based on our free writes. In that paper we also answered a few questions, naming some goals that we want to make for ourselves. Then based on that paper, she gave us a list of goals, and we chose two and explained why we chose those goals. That is all the paperwork we did, but we did start a new unit. The unit we started is called... (drumroll please)... non-fiction articles!!!! We are studying... (another drumroll please)... WESTWARD EXPANSION! We have studied photographs while using a specific way to take notes. We are using a way where we separate the page in 3 boxes one on the bottom longways and two on the top longways. On the bottom we label it summary, the two tops ones are keywords and details/sketches. We have chosen a topic, (if not yet, soon) on what we want to write an article about. Well it has to be from the time period of westward expansion. We are using books and google slides from Ms.Fought as our source for our topic.

In math people have taken the re-test and we are learning to recognize rule patterns, with fractions.

In writing we are finishing up our project on PSAs . Most people have finished their final project and are sharing them with the rest of the class. When they do that we give them feedback and tell them what they could change and what we loved. Other people are just finishing their first draft of the PSA’s. Some are still recording and/or finding images. These PSA’s are due this Friday, So those who are still working on pictures have to step it up a bit.

In math we are finishing up our unit on dividing decimals . we are reviewing the things we forgot over winter break, and then we will the they assesment.  It will have many questions asking us what is 1.8/0.6. We are all very prepared for it. Since the units of multiplying and dividing decimals are our hardest, Ms. Rached is going to allow us to do a retake of the test. And for our report card use the one where we got the highest score.

In reading, we have begun our new unit: nonfiction! We will be writing short books about any topic we want, so Ms Greller can assess us. We have many nonfiction books, and Ms Greller checks out books from the Brooklyn Public library for us.
