Ft. Mariana!
In writing we printed and shared our articles today with the class. As our new unit, there are going to be two parts the first part is a game. No one knows what the second part is though. The game is where you and your group are a big family. You choose a new last name and first name. Everyone gets a job. On the game with your family, you are conquering the Oregon trail! So far we haven’t done a lot, we just read a packet, did jobs, and created names. Well we know that we are going to come up with backstories for our family, and draw them out.
In reading we are wrapping up our mini books (due on Friday) and slowly working through our read aloud, Bud Not Buddy. MOst people have finished their mini books, and our doing reading tests from Ms.Greller. Or dear reading. We have been adding color and images and blurbs to our mini books so far all of them look GREAT!
This is MARIANA MALONEY! I am a guest writer today. (3/1) Today is a Wednesday, so we had THEATRE! In theatre we have been doing the fifth grade five minute plays, last week we finished our plays, and this week Mr. Gioa announced which plays were picked! The plays that were chosen were, Magic, by: Mariana, Pilar, and Gwen, StepFord Academy, by: Lulu and Ines, Mases, by: Tenzin and Chihiro, and Starting Fresh, by: Riley and Taran. Also, Mr. Gioa was so amazed by a piece of work in 306, that he decided that our class is going to do it as well. It is called The Switch-a-Roo!, by: Lucia, Sienna, and Beatrice. We will be having our first rehearsal next Wednesday!

In math, we just finished up our unit on multiplying fractions. We just took the test and turned in the exemplar that goes with it. Our new unit is… DIVIDING DECIMALS!!!! So far we have done a lot. In 5th grade we are only going to divide with unit fractions (fractions with one as the numerator). We have noticed that sometimes our quotient will be bigger than our divisor. In the equations we have done this whole number÷ fraction and vice versa. Here is an example: 5÷1/4

In writing we have been continuing westward expansion. We chose a topic to write about and created headings for it. Here are some example topics; the dangers on the oregon trail, the Native Americans during the time of westward expansion, the donner party, Lewis and Clark, and more. AFter we decided our topic and wrote down our headings (on post-its), we started drafting underneath the headings. Soon we are going to be writing the articles about our topic, like Ms.Fought said we would.

In reading we have been looking more into finding text structure and main ideas in articles. We would take an article and Ms.Greller would split it up into sections and we would have to either find what text structure that section uses, or the main idea. Also Ms.Greller really wants to put out there for us that one article won’t have just one text structure. For example when she split up an article into sections for us, one paragraph was split in ½!

In math we have just taken the test for adding and subtracting fractions. And we are now moving into our new unit of multiplying fractions. We have used models of making dots into rows according to the denominator, and then circling some of the dots according to the numerator. If you want to know more on this method, in HWS 52, the first problem gives an example of how to use that method.

This week in reading we have  been working on our tackling non-fiction unit and we are currently studying text structures such as main idea and detail, problem and solution as well as cause and effect. We are learning to dig deeper  in our books. At the end of the unit we will be writing our own short books on whatever non-fiction topic we choose.

In writing we have finished up our PSA unit. We have written multiple reflections for writing. We wrote one on PSA’s. We also wrote one on what grade we think we should get, based on our free writes. In that paper we also answered a few questions, naming some goals that we want to make for ourselves. Then based on that paper, she gave us a list of goals, and we chose two and explained why we chose those goals. That is all the paperwork we did, but we did start a new unit. The unit we started is called... (drumroll please)... non-fiction articles!!!! We are studying... (another drumroll please)... WESTWARD EXPANSION! We have studied photographs while using a specific way to take notes. We are using a way where we separate the page in 3 boxes one on the bottom longways and two on the top longways. On the bottom we label it summary, the two tops ones are keywords and details/sketches. We have chosen a topic, (if not yet, soon) on what we want to write an article about. Well it has to be from the time period of westward expansion. We are using books and google slides from Ms.Fought as our source for our topic.

In math people have taken the re-test and we are learning to recognize rule patterns, with fractions.

In writing we are finishing up our project on PSAs . Most people have finished their final project and are sharing them with the rest of the class. When they do that we give them feedback and tell them what they could change and what we loved. Other people are just finishing their first draft of the PSA’s. Some are still recording and/or finding images. These PSA’s are due this Friday, So those who are still working on pictures have to step it up a bit.

In math we are finishing up our unit on dividing decimals . we are reviewing the things we forgot over winter break, and then we will the they assesment.  It will have many questions asking us what is 1.8/0.6. We are all very prepared for it. Since the units of multiplying and dividing decimals are our hardest, Ms. Rached is going to allow us to do a retake of the test. And for our report card use the one where we got the highest score.

In reading, we have begun our new unit: nonfiction! We will be writing short books about any topic we want, so Ms Greller can assess us. We have many nonfiction books, and Ms Greller checks out books from the Brooklyn Public library for us.

In writing we are doing our psa’s(public service announcements.) Different groups have been assigned to different topics, such as smoking, cyberbullying, digital addiction, animal abuse, homelessness etc. We are using the app Splice to create psa’s on all of our topics. We have separated into 8 groups, and each  group has a head writer , A head actor and cinematographer, and a director.  We goON WEBSITES such as Newseala to get information  for our  topics. We all share a ipad,  AND WE USE THIS APP CALLED SPLICE, WHERE WE Find pictures of our topics , then we  record ourselves and add music.

In reading we have just finished our book club books. So now we are working on character posters. Character posters are where we take the main character and draw him or her. But this is no art class, so we also write the characters desires, pressures/struggles, social issues, and many more. Ms. Greller gave books out such as pictures of hollis woods, crash, yolonda’s genius, and others too. Soon after this we  will fill out a survey about our experiences with the book club. Then I believe Ms.Greller will have us use our book clubs again sometime in the year. Now to focus more on our read aloud, we have read a lot, and it has gotten a lot more interesting and given us more debating if either there are elves, or no elves. But Ms.Greller is making sure we are ripping out our hair out because she refuses to read us more. But now finally we have one more chapter to go!!!!!!!!! Thankfully she promised she would would finish afternoon of the elves before  the break.

In math we wrapped up our unit on multiplying  decimals, took the test, and we are now learning how to divide decimals. So far we have covered when you should convert to decimals, or ‘enough to go around’.  We have also learned that we can relate this to multiplying decimals. Since most people’s  grades dropped on the test for multiplying decimals, Ms.Rached is allowing us (after we take the dividing decimals test) to retake both of them. But, if we do get low scores, she will take into account that these two units, are the hardest units we have ever done when she makes our report cards.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What We Are Doing in Class Week 3

In Social Studies we are wrapping up our Election unit, now that the Election is over. We wrote, published, edited , and printed our essays about which candidate we wanted to win. We also started sharing them, and writing comments about each  other's essays while eating popcorn.  Also before that we held a vote for the national presidential candidates. Some people voted for other people than Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, such as ELIZABETH WARREN [ONE],  MICHELLE OBAMA [four],  GARY JOHNSON [ONE],  DONALD TRUMP [THIRTEEN],  HILLARY CLINTON [TWO HUNDRED!].
. Hillary won our “election” at 200 votes, compared to one, four, and thirteen. in class we were also studying how the states voted and the Electoral College. On the graph we also studied  the different shades of red and blue. We talked about how some states went back and forth. The people who watched it would tell us some things. The election unit was a very, very  jubilant.

In reading we have been taught a new entry type for our reading response.  It is called a pressure map. It is where you write about  a certain  characters  pressures. we are still reading Afternoon of the Elves. We have also been put into book club,. and  are working on creating pressure maps for Fly Away Home.
